Just a quick tip for all of our Clever customers. We know many of you use, and love, WordPress. We get it! It’s a terrific content management system, blog platform, etc. You can make it into almost anything you want it to be. There’s just one small issue…
If not taken care of, WordPress can be a bit… insecure. And no, I’m not trying to say that it doesn’t like how it looks in the mirror! What I’m referring to is things like the permissions on some folders and files being set to 777 (meaning that ‘everyone’ can read, write, and execute to those folders/files), which makes it easy for people to find out you’re running a WordPress site, and it’s very easy to target any known security holes because almost every WordPress site has the same general folder structure.
But take heart! There are tools out there to help you secure your beloved WordPress installation. We do what we can here at CleverHost to help make things as secure as we can, but at the end of the day you have a part to play to. So that’s why we wanted to tell you about this really terrific, and clever, plugin called Better WP Security. NO, it’s not a very catchy name, but it’s very apropos!
I’m not going to go on and on about all the cool things Better WP Security does. What you need to do know is that it helps lock down some of the common things hackers try to use in order to hack into your WordPress site, like change the URLs for the WordPress dashboard (including login, and admin), renaming the ‘admin’ account, and banning known troublesome bots.
So if you’re running WordPress, make sure you install Better WP Security, or something like it!
